Ready for Grade 8?

Every year there are a number of students that want to do some work over the summer to either be better prepared for Math 8 or to possibly make the jump to Math 8+ in the fall.  If you are one of these people, here is what you can do:

Option 1: Using the MathXLforschool Study Plan

A great way to get ready for either Math 8 or Math8+ next year is to use the MathXLforschool Study Plan.  To do this, use the following steps:
  1. Login to www.mathxlforschool.com
  2. Remember that your username is your SAS ID and your password should be math1234.
  3. Click on Study Plan on the left hand side and you should then see this:

  4. Each box represents one investigation of each unit. The amount of shading tells you how well you have mastered each investigation. Click on the investigation you would like to work on over the summer.  The MOST important units for success in Math 8 are "Accentuate the Negative", "Comparing and Scaling", and "Moving Straight Ahead" so focus on these.
  5. Once you click on a box, you will see the screen below.  Remember that the "hats" mean you have mastered it and the "pins" mean that you can do some work on it.  Click on a "pin"

  1. You will then see this screen. Here you will see some practice questions on the bottom that you can try over and over again and the option to "Quiz Me" on the top right.  I would pick "Quiz Me" and see how you do and then go back and practice if you did not pass.
  1. For those of you that are interested in Math 8+, you should also complete the "Thinking with Mathematical Models" and "Looking for Pythagoras"

Option 2: Khan Academy

If what you are looking for is some practice of your basic skills, then I would recommend that you work through the Grade 7 Math "Mission" that you set-up on Khan Academy at the beginning of the year. Remember that you can log on with your SAS gmail account. Just click resume and you are good to go.

Option 3: (Only for those aspiring to Math 8+)

If you would like even more practice, click on the links below:

Module #1 - Working With "y = mx + b"
Module #2 - Comparing Equations
Module #3 - You've Got The Power
Module #4 - Don't Be So Irrational

Have a great summer.
